When we travel we always try to eat and drink local, also because this is something that make us feel our roots and shows us one of the wonderful strengths of our country: diversity. Anyway, patriotism aside, since when we started thinking about Indigeno we felt this need even more. Our holidays this year were (almost all of them) based on wine tasting.
We like to think that Umbria is the little heart of our “boot”, set there in the middle and sometimes a little bit shaky.”
In September our plans were to go to Umbria and discover it by bike. Umbria is a region in the middle of Italy, between Toscana and Marche. We like to think that is the little heart of our “boot”, set there in the middle and sometimes a little bit shaky.
DAY 1 AND 2 | Perugia – Assisi – Spello – Foligno
Perugia, an enchanted city leaning on a hill and teeming with life and young university students, was the beginning of our tour, we then continued in the direction of Foligno passing through Assisi and Spello. We spent one night in Foligno during the Quintana period (the Joust of the Quintana is a knightly tournament and a historical event in costume that takes place in Foligno. The 10 horse-rider pairs, representing their respective districts, compete twice a year: on the evening of the second or third Saturday in June there is the challenge carousel, while in the afternoon of the second or third Sunday in September there is the revenge carousel.)

DAY 3 | Foligno – Spoleto – Castel Ritaldi
From Foligno we continued in direction of Spoleto which is located on the Sant’Elia hill, at the foot of the sacred wood of Monteluco. Here is enough to lose yourself in the narrow streets, admiring, with your nose up, all the culture that you can breathe.

DAY 4 | Montefalco – Bevagna – Cannara
The day after we left in the direction of Montefalco, a point of reference in the wine region where Sagrantino di Montefalco and Montefalco Rosso are produced, it is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. After lunch we passed through Bevagna and we arrived in Cannara where the onion festival was taking place.
And now the most important things, where did we eat? Please note that in the restaurant listed below you can also drink natural wine.
Perugia: La Fame
Spello: Vinosofia
Foligno: Le Dodici Rondini (actually we slept here but we met the owner and rumors say that it’s a very good restaurant)
We also visited some natural wine producer…but now this post is too long and the dinner is ready! We will explain everything in another post. For now enjoy these beautiful figs that were resting with the grapes ( the one used to make the passito wine)…in a very famous cellar. 😉
now the smell is the fresh one of the forest in the sleepy hours of mid-afternoon.
The sea does not exist here. Il filo di Paglia is a magical thing way out of the semantic field of the word Liguria.
…ora l’odore è quello fresco del bosco nelle ore sonnolente di metà pomeriggio.
Il mare, qui, non esiste. Il filo di Paglia è una magia fuori dal campo semantico della parola Liguria.
