Where this wine come from?
Viognier is a white wine that originated in southern France in Northern Rhôn valley (Condrieu e Château Grillet). The northern Rhône is characterised by a continental climate with severe winters but warm summers, a lot influenced by the mistral wind.
Soil: in general in the Rhôn valley you can find granite and limestone or clay soils.
Curiosity
- For a long time forgotten, Viognier has become one of the most appreciated vine varieties in the world at the end of the twentieth century. In 1965 the cultivations of Viognier extended on only 8 hectares of territory, only in France and less than 1900 litres of wine were produced.
Nowadays Viognier is also grown in Italy, Spain, Greece, Switzerland and Austria. However, it is not in Europe that it is most successful: it is, in fact, one of the great American white grape varieties, grown mainly in California.
- We can say that Jon (Vin Noe wine maker) and this grape have a lot in common, Viognier’s origin is in France and then “moved” to California while Jon comes from California and he moved, almost 10 years ago, to France.
